One hundred years after the end of the First World War, the chamber orchestra "La Follia" takes its audience in the middle of the trenches, the community of the fighting soldiers, to which musicians from all over Europe belonged. Photos, videos, compositions and lectures from "La Mort de près" and "Ceux de 14" by Maurice Genevoix, "Im Westen nichts neues" by Erich Maria Remarque takes the audience into the works created during World War One.

The Chamber Orchestra of Alsace is a non-permanent classical ensemble that was founded under the name “La Follia” in 1971 by professional musicians of the French Rhine Valley area, led at the time by the violinist Miguel de la Fuente. This geometrically variable ensemble of 8 to 30 musicians usually plays without a conductor.
After almost 45 years of existence, the Chamber Orchestra of Alsace “La Follia”’s track record is quite impressive: over 3000 concerts, 30 premieres, and a significant discography regularly rewarded and acclaimed by critics. The orchestra, whose roots remain in Alsace, has been bringing classical music of all periods in small villages as well as in renowned concert halls, all over France and occasionally abroad, aside renown soloists such as David Guerrier, Marielle Nordmann, Gérard Caussé, Juliette Hurel, and Gauthier Capuçon. It is actively supported by regional and local councils, technically and financially.
French violinist Hugues Borsarello became in 2009 the new artistic director of the Chamber Orchestra of Alsace “La Follia”, and has been leading the ensemble as a concertmaster since.

Not only was Hugues Borsarello born in a musician family, one could say that he was born to music, that music has always been part of him even before his birth, music has shaped him. Then everything went fast: he concluded his studies at the Conservatoire National de Région in Paris with a “Premier Prix”, and joined the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris to study with Patrice Fontanarosa, and created a trio together with David Saudubray (piano) and Gautier Capuçon (cello) - because music and human relationships have always been strongly related in his career.
Hugues Borsarello was a musician in the Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester under the baton of Claudio Abbado and Seiji Ozawa; he also went on tours with Yuri Bashmet, Yo-Yo Ma... This experience was a great opportunity for him to discover very early the large symphonic repertoire as a concertmaster.
Since his musical beginnings with his family and later with fellow musician friends, Hugues Borsarello has kept very special links with chamber music. Next to Jérôme Ducros, Olivier Charlier, Gautier Capuçon, Laure Favre-Kahn... he plays in famous French festivals. In 2010 he created a chamber music ensemble with his brothers and sisters -all professional musicians too. The ensemble performed for the first time in August 2010 during the Festival en Périgord Noir together with Gautier Capuçon.
This successful experience was the beginning of a new aera in Hugues Borsarello’s career, whose musical energy constantly pushes to discover and explore new fields. He has been pursuing a solo career since, and recorded two albums – Mozart Concertos Integral (with La Follia) & “Légendes Fantastiques” (solo pieces) – which were both very much appreciated from critics and music lovers.

Dominique Horwitz was born in 1957 in Paris, where he grew up. In 1971 his family moved to Berlin where he attended a Franco-German grammar-school. Having been recommended by a friend, he gave his first TV appearance when he was nineteen years old. Only shortly after he made his debut on the big screen in the role of Leo Singer in Peter Lilienthal’s award-winning film “David”.
In 1978 Horwitz had a one-year cabaret-interlude at the Berliner CaDeWe followed by a contract at the Tübinger Zimmertheater from 1979 to 1983. In 1985 he was under contract at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel in Munich and from 1985 to 1988 he was signed at the Hamburger Thalia Theater.
Shooting “Der große Bellheim” with Dieter Wedel brought him back to the world of film. In 1993 he had his international breakthrough playing the title role in Josef Vilsmaier’s “Stalingrad”. Since then he has been admired in many film and TV productions but nevertheless remained true to the stage. Amongst other roles, he has played in “The Black Rider” directed by Robert Wilson, in the “Dreigroschenoper” directed by Katharina Thalbach and in Harold Pinter’s “Moonlight” directed by Peter Zadek. In autumn 2008 he played the role of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf in Doug Wright’s “I am my own wife” at the Renaissance Theater Berlin.
Having grown up with Jaques Brel’s chansons, Dominique Horwitz decided in 1984 to arrange and present his own show with selected songs from the great chansonnier – a success that was rewarded with reviews saying that he did better than Brel did himself. For the first time “Horwitz sings Brel” will be in Vienna at the Musikverein in Spring 2017.
Horwitz certainly remains a very welcome guest on the musical-literary scene: be it a recital of Brecht songs, Weill’s “Dreigroschenoper”, be it Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale” or Beethoven’s “Egmont”, Horwitz sings, plays and interprets the different characters with an incomparable intensity.
Dominique Horwitz recently worked together with conductors as Valery Gergiev (Stravinsky’s “Oedipus Rex”), Daniel Barenboim (Stravinsky’s “Soldier’s Tale”) and Christoph Eschenbach (Mendelssohn’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”). He has been invited to important festivals such as Lucerne Festival, Rheingau Musik-Festival or Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival.
As singer Dominique’s highlights of the past season are performances of “Dominique Horwitz sings Jacques Brel” with the WDR Funkhausorchester, Bremer Philharmoniker or the Orchestra of Komische Oper Berlin. Further he performed the evening “Dominique Horwitz sings Robert Mitchum” in Potsdam and Hannover, a project with the WDR Funkhausorchester in Cologne.
In 1992 Horwitz received the “Golden Lion” for Best Actor and in 2002 he was awarded the Mephisto Award for his Brel programme.
