Charpentier’s Sacred stories comprise a set of works that stands apart from the rest of this output. Although the strikingly beautiful scores has been preserved, it is unclear where and how they were performed. They can be regarded as brief sacred operas, or as offshoots of medieval mystery plays insofar as they tell a story. Judith, Mary Magdalene, Cecilia: their names evoke biblical episodes and mythical realms. Their exemplary tales and remote existences are distilled in Charpentier’s music to express a range of sentiments that still seem intact.

Created in Lyon in 2009, Correspondances gathers around harpsichordist and organist Sébastien Daucé a group of singers and instrumentalists, all specialist and passionate about the French Grand Siècle music. In a few years, Correspondances has become a reference in 17th century French music repertoire. Under the auspices of Baudelaire’s ‘correspondances’, the ensemble not only rediscovers renown composers such as Marc-Antoine Charpentier but also rekindles the image of musicians nowadays little known but quite requested in their time, such as Antoine Boësset or Etienne Moulinié, whom modern music directly affects us today.
A dedicated collaboration blossomed to unearth rare and neglected musical treasures and gave birth to nine internationally mutli-awarded recordings: Chocs Classica, ffff Télérama, Diapasons d’Or, Echo Preis of the World Premiere Recording of the Year 2016, Editor’s Choice from Gramophone, Opera Recording of the Year 2016 for Limelight Magazine…
All these recordings testify of the ensemble’s fundamentals, and its thirst for discovery: with Marc-Antoine Charpentier for O Maria ! (2010), the Litanies de la Vierge (2013) or the last published disc Pastorale de Noël et O de l’Avent (October 2016), Antoine Boësset (L’Archange et le Lys, 2011), Etienne Moulinié with Meslanges pour la Chapelle d’un Prince (2015), Henry du Mont in O Mysterium (2016) or Michel-Richard de Lalande and his Leçons de Ténèbres with Sophie Karthäuser (2015).
The exceptional release of Le Concert Royal de la Nuit in 2015 is the fruit of a three-year research work to make possible the rediscovery of a major musical moment of the 17th century that introduced Louis XIV as the Roi Soleil.
The Caisse des Dépôts and Mécénat Musical Société Générale are Correspondances’ main sponsors. The ensemble is also supported by the Ministry of Culture (DRAC Rhône-Alpes), the Rhône-Alpes Region, the City of Lyon. The ensemble is in residency in Ambronay (member of the Rema network), Theater of Caen, MC2 Grenoble, and Chapelle de l Trinité in Lyon with the support of City of Lyon.

Organist, harpsichordist, Sébastien Daucé aims to enhance the little known, however abundant 17th century repertory, both sacred and secular. He met the future members of the ensemble during his course at the early music department of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Lyon where he studied harpsichord and basso continuo with musicians such as Françoise Lengellé and Yves Rechsteiner. First solicited as a continuo player and singing master (Ensemble Pygmalion, Aix-en-Provence Festival, Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir…), he created Correspondances in 2009, gathering singers and musicians, all specialist of the French Grand Siècle.
With the ensemble he conducts from the harpsichord or organ, he had the opportunity to play all over France and worldwide for radios, several prestigious festivals (Saintes, Utrecht, Ambronay, Milan, Bruges), and exceptional places (Château de Versailles, Louvre, Wigmore Hall). Sébastien Daucé and the Ensemble Correspondances are also in residency at the Théâtre de Caen, where they are developing their first lyrical projects.
The ensemble toured in Japan, Columbia, China, United States, and frequently collaborates in Europe (Germany, Benelux, Netherlands, Italy). Sébastien Daucé’s knowledge of this new and little-played repertory enables him to undertake eight much rewarded recordings, six of them for Harmonia Mundi: Diapason d’or of the Year, ffff Télérama, Editor’s Choice for Gramophone (UK), Choc of the year for Classica, IRR Outstanding (UK). The ensemble enjoys an international reputation: in 2016 it receives the Echo Preis (Germany) of World Premiere Recording and Young Counductor; Australian magazine Limelight awards Le Concert Royal de la Nuit Best Opera Recording of the Year 2016.
Alongside his musical career, Sébastien Daucé collaborates with the best 17th century specialists, publishes regularly articles and takes part in important projects on performance-practice. He is passionate about the musical style question and edits music to constitute Correspondances’ repertory, sometimes reconstructing full compositions as Le Ballet Royal de la Nuit. He teaches at the Pôle Supérieur of Paris-Boulogne-Billancourt, and is artistic director of the London Festival of Baroque Music 2018.
Since 2013 Sébastien Daucé is associate artist at the Fondation Royaumont.
