Biography

More than almost any other conductor, Francesco Angelico represents a young wave of Italian maestros with a rapidly growing presence on the international concert and opera platform.

Chief Conductor of the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra Innsbruck as well as the Tyrolean Theatre, Francesco Angelico now leads the ensemble in his fourth and at the same time last season for new productions of Dvořák’s Rusalka, Strauss’s Cappriccio and Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera as well as symphonic concerts focussing on the completion of a Beethoven cycle to conclude in 2017.

In 2016, Angelico was decorated with a special recognition for his work, receiving the Austrian Opera Award for best musical director of Innsbruck’s new production of Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur in 2015.

With the start of the 2017/18 season, Angelico will assume the position of Music Director at the Hessian State Theatre Kassel. Leading one of the oldest orchestras in Europe, he will follow in the footsteps of its previous Music Directors which included such names as Christoph von Dohnányi, Gerd Albrecht or Ádám Fischer.

Francesco Angelico is a regular guest at leading opera houses worldwide. This season he will give his debut at New National Theatre Tokyo with a new production of Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. At the Bavarian State Opera he recently conducted Henze’s Elegy for Young Lovers and Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia. He further led a new production of La Bohème at Oper Köln in November 2015.

Symphonic highlights of this season include Angelico’s debut with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, SWR Symphonieorchester, Staatsorchester Kassel, Münchner Symphoniker and Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz. Angelico also returns to the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and the Münchner Rundfunkorchester.

Having completed his cello studies at the Conservatoire in Modena in 2001, Francesco Angelico went on to study conducting with Giorgio Bernasconi in Lugano in 2003. Graduating in 2006, Angelico assisted Bernasconi for his contemporary concert series 900 Passato e presente for Swiss Radio in Lugano. Performing contemporary repertoire remains a special priority in Angelico’s work.

Francesco Angelico first received international attention in 2009 when he won 2nd prize at the Malko Competition. He went on to win the Deutsche Dirigentenpreis in 2011.

Francesco Angelico was born in Caltagirone, Sicily in 1977.

SEASON 2016/2017

Quotes

“Der Chefdirigent mausert sich immer mehr zur interessantesten Figur des Tiroler Landestheaters. Ein Ästhet, der wunderbare Bläsersoli formulieren und das Tiroler Symphonieorchester mit warmer Fülle und geschmeidiger Flexibilität spielen lässt. Dvořáks Volksliedton missversteht Angelico nicht als Einladung zum spitzen, handfesten Musizieren. Selbst kleine Akzente bekommen ihren genau abgeschmeckten Klanggehalt. Keine verkappte Opernsymphonie vernimmt man da, sondern wirklich sängerfreundliche, substanzreiche Theatermusik.”

Merkur, 26.09.2016, Markus Thiel

“Der gebürtige Sizilianer, der vor zwei Jahren den Deutschen Dirigentenpreis gewann, beflügelte das Hessischer Staatsorchester und begeisterte das Publikum des 6. Sinfoniekonzerts. (…) Man darf sehr gespannt die weitere Karriere des jungen italienischen Dirigenten verfolgen.”

Wiesbadener Kurier, 15.03.2013, Axel Zibulski
